Vocabulary #3

1.)Catharsis-the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions.
Ex. She felt good after she catharsis what was on her mind.

2.)Taboo-a social or religious custom prohibiting or forbidding discussion of a particular practice or forbidding association with a particular person, place, or thing.
Ex. It was taboo to talk about sex during the class.

3.)Sordid-involving ignoble actions and motives; arousing moral distaste and contempt.
Ex.the story paints a sordid picture of bribes and scams.

4.)Swindle-use deception to deprive (someone) of money or possessions.
Ex.a businessman swindled investors out of millions of dollars.

5.)Frivolous-not having any serious purpose or value.
Ex.rules to stop frivolous lawsuits.

6.)Inadvertently-without intention; accidentally.
Ex.his name had been inadvertently omitted from the list.

7.)Incendiary-(of a device or attack) designed to cause fires.
Ex.incendiary grenades.

8.)Jargon-special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand.
Ex.legal jargon.

9.)Colloquialism-a word or phrase that is not formal or literary, typically one used in ordinary or familiar conversation.
Ex. Kids today make up slang words that are colloquialism.

10.)Archaism-a thing that is very old or old-fashioned.
Ex. Shakespeare in his plays use words that are archaism today.

11.)Cudgel-a short thick stick used as a weapon.
Ex. a thick wooden cudgel.

12.)Egregious-outstandingly bad; shocking.
Ex. egregious abuses of copyright.

13.)Anesthetize-administer an anesthetic to (a person or animal), especially so as to induce a loss of consciousness.
Ex. tragedy of a magnitude that anesthetizes the mind.

14.)Euphonious-(of sound, especially speech) pleasing to the ear.
Ex. this successful candidate delivers a stream of fine, euphonious phrases.

15.)Scrupulous-(of a person or process) diligent, thorough, and extremely attentive to details.
Ex. the research has been carried out with scrupulous attention to detail.

16.)Perverted-(of a thing) having been corrupted or distorted from its original course, meaning, or state.
Ex. this sudden surge of perverted patriotism.

17.)Superfluous-unnecessary, especially through being more than enough.
Ex. the purchaser should avoid asking for superfluous information.

18.)Saxon-of or relating to the Anglo-Saxons, their language (Old English), or their period of dominance in England (5th–11th centuries).
Ex. Saxon is a language by germanic people.

19.)Slovenly-(especially of a person or action) careless; excessively casual.
Ex. He didn’t really care so he gave a slovenly speech.

20.)Provocation-action or speech that makes someone annoyed or angry, especially deliberately.

Ex. you should remain calm and not respond to provocation.
